A Short History of Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a system of health care that is over 3000 years old. There are many theories on how acupuncture developed but there is evidence that early techniques started as far back as prehistoric times.

Acupuncture became better known in the United States after a newspaper reporter went to China to cover President Nixon's visit.  He hurt his back,

received a successful acupuncture treatment, and subsequently wrote about the experience in the New York Times.  Some might say that is was the only positive outcome of his entire presidency.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is now a common topic in mainstream media. Acceptance and demand has increased dramatically over the last few years. According to a recent survey of Medical Doctors,
Acupuncture received the highest rating of effectiveness of any complimentary alternative medicine.  Acupuncturists are now working in integrated settings such as hospitals and clinics for cancer care, rheumatology, orthopedics and addiction.

What it is

Traditional Chinese Medicine views a person as an energetic system in which body and mind are interconnected, each influencing the other. A universal life force called Qi (chee) is the energy that
circulates throughout the body along pathways called meridians or channels.

Acupuncture points are located along these meridians. Blockage or imbalance of Qi can result in pain or illness. Traditional Chinese Medicine works to restore normal Qi circulation by stimulating a person's natural healing energy. When Qi and blood flow freely, there is no pain; when balance is restored, health and wellness are achieved.
